Bill Traylor

Painter

William Traylor was an African-American self-taught artist from Lowndes County, Alabama. Born into slavery, Traylor spent the majority of his life after emancipation as a sharecropper.
It was only after 1939, following his move to Montgomery, Alabama, that Traylor began to draw.

Provenance: Private collection of Patricia Lynn Beebe, listed on Artnet.com, Galerie Perlita 2021, Musee d' Art Moderne 2022

"Rabbit Hunt" by Bill Traylor reveals the Outsider artist's process as well as his highly sophisticated understanding of space, color, form, and composition. It includes a number of vibrant figurative elements: two men point weapons at their captured bounty while one dashes through the foreground with their prize, a disproportionately large red rabbit atop a vast cooking pot.
